If there has been a single defining trait for Republicans during the Trump era, it has been self-preservation. It’s telling that those Republicans who have challenged President Donald Trump, be it over his lack of ethics or his policies, have found themselves on the outside looking in. About a month ago, I ran into Mayor Ron Nirenberg in a grocery store. We stood on the edge of the dairy section and chatted about the upcoming runoff election for mayor between Rolando Pablos and eventual winner Gina Ortiz Jones. I will always remember this impromptu conversation, not so much for what Nirenberg said but for how the community responded to the mayor. It felt like everyone in the store knew him. Shoppers strolled by with their carts and casually patted him on the back or shoulder.

When our Opinion team brainstormed an interactive mayoral survey in February, we never imagined it would become a campaign issue in the June runoff. We knew that some candidates might disagree with some of the questions or might squirm about providing firm answers. But in a mayoral election with 27 candidates - eight of whom we viewed as serious given their experience and name recognition - we thought an interactive survey could stir up voter interest.
