Seattle voters affirmed that political shift in 2023 when they elected a slate of five district councilmembers who are closely aligned with Nelson’s political vision. Nelson took the lead as Council president just two years into her first term.  The 2025 District 9 Council election will give voters a chance to respond to Nelson’s leadership of the Council and the more conservative bent she and her colleagues have brought to City Hall.  Nelson faces three opponents in her bid for reelection.

Councilmember Cathy Moore introduced legislation Thursday to modify Seattle’s ethics rules to allow Councilmembers to disclose conflicts of interest and still vote on legislation that presents the conflict, rather than recuse themselves from the vote, as is currently required.

This fall, voters in southeast Seattle’s District 2, which stretches from the Chinatown-International District through Rainier Beach, will elect someone to finish the remaining two years in former D2 Councilmember Tammy Morales’s four-year term. Morales resigned from the Council at the start of 2025, just one year after being reelected, alleging toxic treatment by her colleagues.

Despite the higher demand, pandemic-era federal programs helped increase access to food and lowered rates of food insecurity.
