President Donald Trump abruptly paused the high reciprocal tariffs that took effect Wednesday — with the exception of China, whose rate was increased to 125% — sending Bay Area tech giant stocks surging. “It’s obviously good news,” said Ted Egan, San Francisco’s chief economist, on the pause. But the impact of China tariffs on the city is hard to immediately measure, and other economists warned that costs could still rise on some consumer goods.

Gavin Newsom called for other countries to exempt California’s exports from retaliatory tariffs placed on U.S. goods in response to President Donald Trump’s widespread measures. “Donald Trump’s tariffs do not represent all Americans, particularly those that I represent here in the fifth-largest economy in the world,” Newsom said in a video posted to X Friday.
