PHOENIX – Brittney Griner pledged never to play overseas again – with one notable exception: representing Team USA. The opportunity arose in October, when the USA Basketball Women’s National Team unveiled its training camp roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, featuring Griner and her Phoenix Mercury teammate, Diana Taurasi. “I didn’t think I would ever wear this jersey again,” Griner said Tuesday.

AVONDALE – Despite starting the day fourth among the four drivers still in the hunt for the NASCAR Cup Championship and 15th in the 36-car field, Ryan Blaney still beat the odds to walk away with his first Cup Championship in the end. Blaney, who finished second behind Ross Chastain on Phoenix Raceway’s distinctive 1-mile tri-oval, outlasted the other qualifiers for the “Championship Four,” William Byron, Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell, in the season-long chase for the championship.

PHOENIX – When twin sisters Laura and Sydney Erikstrup last played together, they were seniors at Beaverton High School near Portland. They figured it might be the last time. Laura, a 6-foot-2 forward, was headed to the University of San Diego. Sydney, a 6-foot-1 guard, had signed with Arizona State. “You take it for granted when you no longer can play with someone you’ve grown up with,” Laura said. “Up until we were 18, we were side by side.

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks rookie pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, just over a week removed from turning 25 years old, got the biggest call of his life after putting up an impressive showing just days earlier in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the powerful Philadelphia Phillies. But while Pfaadt was lights out in the Diamondbacks’ 2-1 Game 3 victory, pitching a deciding Game 7, with a trip to the World Series on the line, is a whole other kettle of fish.

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks continue their most successful postseason run since their 2001 World Series victory Tuesday night, just one win away from the franchise’s second World Series berth. Led by hot hitting and big performances from young talent, it’s clear the team’s foundation is strong. However, the club’s future at Chase Field might not be on such solid footing.

PHOENIX – Living an arm’s throw away from Citizens Bank Park, Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen grew up around Philadelphia Phillies baseball. The Phillies ballpark was just over 10 miles away from Somerdale, New Jersey, where Gallen was born and raised. He grew up rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia 76ers. However, he was not a Phillies fan, even during their 2008 World Series run.

PHOENIX – It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that when Duke Brennan and Malcolm Flaggs decided after their freshman year at Arizona State to enter the NCAA transfer portal, they would do it together. And it figures that their trip through the portal would take them to the same destination – a short hop across the Valley to Grand Canyon University.

PHOENIX – Ricky Tiedemann graduated high school in the spring of 2020, with hopes of being drafted by an MLB organization. The baseball prospect had tremendous talent, but with the COVID-19 pandemic raging, it was a brutal time for young players to earn attention. The left-handed pitcher committed to San Diego State, but due to the eligibility requirements for the MLB draft, he chose not to wait. “I kind of just had a feeling I was ready at that time,” Tiedemann said.
