As Senate Republicans have been engaged in private discussions about restructuring Medicaid, the health insurance program for low-income individuals, to fund the extension of Trump’s $4.6 trillion tax cuts from 2017, along with other tax initiatives, a 9 state coalition of organizations have banded together to lead health equity movements in southern states that have not expanded Medicaid, and yesterday they met virtually to discuss what’s at stake in Florida.

The new southbound span of the Howard Frankland Bridge along Interstate 275 South will finally open for drivers after 10am Tuesday morning. It’s part of the most expensive bridge project in Florida history. Drivers leaving Tampa towards Pinellas County will make a slight shift to the right on the Howard Frankland Bridge to enter the new span. David Alonzo is the Construction Project Manager with the Florida Department of Transportation and says to expect some lane closures leading up to the shift.

About 70 postal workers and labor organizers rallied in Tampa today (Thursday) amid threats to privatize the United States Postal Service. It was part of The American Postal Workers Union’s national “Day of Action” Last month President Donald Trump said he may put the U.S. Postal Service under the control of the Commerce Department. In effect that would be an executive branch takeover of the post office.

Drivers working for the largest mail subcontractor for the US Postal Service are in their third week of a 24-hour a day 7 day a week strike. Drivers in Tampa for 10 Roads Express are joining other union members as part of a strike across 8 states. Cars were honking in support of the half a dozen members of the Teamsters Local 79 union picketed Wednesday morning to demand a better deal for workers.

A University of South Florida administrator has resigned after the university put him on administrative leave. The resignation comes after he made comments defending diversity, equity and inclusion. The Republican-controlled Senate Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee yesterday approved a measure that targets diversity, equity, and inclusion, or “DEI,” efforts at medical schools and in state-agency contracts.
