A Conservative councillor has announced his defection to Reform UK. Robert Potts was elected to Durham County Council in 2021 and this year stood as the Tory candidate for the area's police and crime commissioner (PCC). In a post on social media he said he was "proud to represent the Reform Party, as their first ever Durham county councillor". Conservative group leader Richard Bell said he was "disappointed" to lose Potts but declined to comment further.

Councillors in Northumberland have warned it will be "really difficult" to roll out mandatory food waste collection services due to a lack of funding. Local authorities will be required to provide food waste collection from April 2026 under rules set out by the previous government. Recognising the additional costs, the government has committed to offering councils extra funding, but Northumberland County Council said the money was not enough.

They complained that following a recent change, Uber does not share with them how much customers are charged for journeys, just what a driver is entitled to, which they say is "unfair". Volcanic rock found in North East soil is being given to farmers in the hope of improving yields and environmental sustainability. It follows a Newcastle University study into basalt rock powder which included a trial at Nafferton Farm, Stocksfield. Researchers found the powder offered a potential yield increase of up to 22% while helping to capture carbon. Manufacturer UNDO is giving the fertiliser to farms free of charge to encourage take up of the product.
