Montana's first real cold snap of winter is forecast to plunge the holiday weekend into frigid temperatures. But this stint of arctic chill won't be as cold or as prolonged as other cold spells the past couple winters. The coldest temps — overnight lows that usually bottom out just before dawn — were predicted to be anywhere from just above zero degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday to double-digits below zero Monday morning across Eastern Montana.

One week after a series of back-to-back waves of precipitation brought significant snowfall to western Montana's mountains, many areas have switched from having less snow than normal to having about average or more snow than normal for late December. According to data compiled and published online by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Bitterroot River basin held 91% of its historical normal snow-water equivalent — the amount of liquid water contained in the snowpack — as of Tuesday morning.

MTCX Skis, Bikes & Events, a Missoula-based organizer of cycling and Nordic ski races across western Montana, is launching a new bicycle race series in 2025 that incorporates both mountain bike races and gravel road races. For backcountry skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers in the Bitterroot, Missoula and Seeley areas, it’s a ritual as familiar as waxing skis or tuning a snowmobile when winter sets in: checking avalanche danger forecasts and other related reports from the West Central Montana Avalanche Center. This year, those potentially life-saving forecasts and bulletins like avalanche warnings almost certainly will not arrive on time the first week of December, despite early snowfall piling up.
