    In a tough district, the El Campo Ladybirds clawed their way to a third-place finish after taking down the Bay City Lady Cats 11-7 on the road this past Thursday. The Lady Cats jumped on the Ladybirds 3-1 early. However, El Campo’s offense erupted for seven runs in the top of the second to wrestle the lead back to the red and white. El Campo senior Addisyn Fisher led off the top of the second with a walk.

    It’s been three years, but the Louise Hornets will have representation at the state track meet in Austin on May 2. Louise Hornet senior Aedyn Gaona earned himself a trip to state by finishing second in the 200-meter dash. Gaona during prelims, placed third and was on the outside looking in with only the top two getting an automatic bid. The Hornet senior turned on the jets in the final and beat out a runner from Flatonia by a little more than a tenth of a second to secure second place.

    The Wharton Runnin’ Tigers closed district play strong, finishing second and their hard work didn’t go unnoticed, with the district awarding them one of the top honors. Two years ago, Jacoryan Dickerson was the Newcomer of the Year. As a junior last season he was the district’s Defensive MVP and for his play this past year, Dickerson rounded out his career with the Offensive MVP. “I think my accomplishments speaks for the amount of effort I put in over the years.

    Sometimes it’s just not your day and the El Campo Ricebirds had that experience, falling to the Sweeny Bulldogs 2-1 at home Friday night. El Campo had a number of hard hits against Sweeny, but only was able to score one run against the top 25 team in 4A. Of course, you want to be on the other side of the one-run games, but me and the coaches have talked and it’s ok. We haven’t had enough luck and maybe that will flip come playoff time,” Ricebird coach Jacob Hooker said.

    Louise ISD is getting closer to finding its next athletic director and is hoping to have a name to present to the school board next Wednesday. After posting the job for 10 days, following the current athletic director Manny Freeland’s resignation, the school posted the job and received more than 25 applications over the week plus the posting was live. The school is now going over resumes and to try and narrow the applications to around five or six names.
