On April 4, 1968, Sen. Robert Kennedy arrived in Indianapolis in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Kennedy was urged to cancel his rally out of fears for his safety. Kennedy ignored those pleas. Addressing a crowd unaware of the tragedy, Kennedy told them of King’s death. He implored those present to honor King’s legacy, and reject violence and retribution.
