The Trace When someone is shot and killed, the likelihood that their case will be solved changes based on who and where they are. It’s a complicated aspect of gun violence in America — and just looking at the national numbers doesn’t correctly contextualize the problem. The FBI estimates that police departments solve 57.8 percent of homicides, but if one were to look closer at the numbers in Black communities across the country, the percentages drop dramatically.

The Trace Mothers never expect to bury their children. Rachael Parker, a steadfast public servant in Peoria, Illinois, found that the 2020 shooting death of her son, Ryan, made her feel helpless. Just one year earlier, after nearly a decade on the county board, Parker had been appointed county clerk, a role she still occupies. Every day for years, she has helped maintain public filings, track land records, and issue various licenses.

The Trace Four-year-old LeGend Taliferro was asleep in the early hours of June 29, 2020, when a bullet tore through his room. It was meant for his mother, Charron Powell, and had been fired by a man who had been accused of assaulting her just days earlier. The shooter, Ryson Ellis, shared a child with Powell. After firing his weapon outside of their Kansas City, Missouri, apartment, a bullet passed through a sliding glass door and wall before striking LeGend, killing him.
