Gazans faced deprivation and ongoing strikes as the holiday began. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was committed to his country’s plan to attack the southern Gazan city of Rafah, after President Biden said that such an offensive would cross a “red line.”

Political unrest almost always makes its way into the Oscars, including the red carpet. On Sunday night, a number of attendees showed their support for a cease-fire in Gaza by wearing a red pin with a hand and black heart. Musicians Finneas O’Connell and Billie Eilish were among those wearing the pins, along with actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Ramy Youssef. Outside the event, protesters calling for a cease-fire disrupted traffic around the Dolby Theatre and shut down streets.
