Knowing we would return to Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theater later that evening, we started by parking at City Parking Garage #1 on Valencia, behind the theater. From there we walked to Ponce and took a trolley to the Plaza Coral Gables. The trolley ride was retro and fun, and the waiting time was just minutes. At the Plaza we started our Saturday Night Trifecta with cocktails at the Americana, the open-air bar/restaurant that faces the acre of open space in front of the Loews Hotel.

The IV drip was first “invented” by Baltimore physician John A. Myers, who infused his patients with what became known as a “Myers’ Cocktail” – a mix of water-soluble vitamins – in the ‘70s and early ‘80s. During the same time, Nobel Prize-winning chemist Linus Pauling began using a Vitamin C drip to combat a variety of illnesses, including the common cold and cancer.

After receiving a master’s degree in organizational management from St. Thomas University, Gables native Don Slesnick III began working in IT for law firm Colson Hicks. He then joined the board of the South Florida Digital Alliance, eventually becoming its executive director. He next started Deco Networks, his own IT management consulting company for small businesses and not-for-profits, which he ran for 20 years.

With the holidays upon us, few places better capture the season than the Biltmore Hotel, which dresses itself up for the event – lighting that wraps the royal palms out front like candy canes, and a gloriously adorned Christmas tree in the main lobby. On a recent Friday night, we (my date, AKA my wife) decided to spend our evening out on the town at the Biltmore. The result, we knew, would at least have the advantage of true walkability.

What makes a night in the Gables so easy is that it’s all walkable. On a recent Friday night, we started our evening at Books & Books in the spacious outdoor courtyard bracketed by a wine and beer bar. There would be music later, but for now, the courtyard denizens, of all ages, were content to order food from the indoor café and chat vivaciously. The sun was still shining, prompting bartender Raul Amorin to ask when the winter days would grow shorter.
