Callao is a port city in Peru, part of the Lima metropolitan area, and home to a preponderance of Italians and Peruvians of Italian descent. It is Peru’s chief seaport, home to its fishing fleet and, by default, innumerable seafood restaurants. This explains much of the allure and raison d’être of Francesco, the six-month old restaurant on Miracle Mile adjacent to the Miracle Theatre.

A romantic, gustatory adventure at Il Duomo Dei SaporiChef Tony Maldonado’s new restaurant on Ponce feels like it has been there for years, running with smooth, well-polished confidence. This is not by accident. Chef Maldonado landed with a dozen years of experience under his belt, honed at the helm of his other establishment in Caracas. And it shows.

CVI.CHE 105 brings bold Peruvian flavors to a dazzling settingWhen you think of Peruvian food, ceviche is what usually comes to mind. For that reason, CVI.CHE 105 takes its name from that national dish. But Peruvian cuisine, considered today the most inventive in Latin America, goes well beyond the citrus flavors of marinated seafood, as refreshing and healthy as that may be.

If the trifecta of a superb restaurant is a combination of cuisine, ambiance, and service, then Erba at the LifeTime building on U.S. 1 hits it out of the park. That was the conclusion of Esquire magazine, which recently named Erba one of the “50 Best New Restaurants in America 2023,” and for us, it’s one of the best restaurants in Miami.

It is not a large place — maybe 14 tables — and that is part of its charm. Pascal’s on Ponce is an intimate, romantic space with quiet lighting and soft music, where the emphasis is on quality, not quantity. And that quality — the haute French cuisine of Chef Pascal Oudin — is unmatched anywhere else in the city. Since the year 2000, Oudon has been the Gables’ king of sophisticated French cooking, garnering a loyal clientele.

The first impression you get when you enter Beauty & The Butcher is of a very masculine space, in its own way a kind of man cave. Heavy black curtains block the streetlights and passing traffic along Red Road and San Ignacio Avenue, the columns inside are white brick, and heavy wooden beams rib the ceiling overhead. Along one wall are leather booths and along the other are white marble tables and leather couches.

Adrift Mare, which just opened in October, is part of the reinvention of Miami as a vertical city. In the New Miami, it’s not just residences and offices that climb skyward. The entertainment and amenities have also gone vertical, from the bar Sugar on the 42nd floor rooftop of the East Hotel, to the score of hotel pools that are a half dozen floors above street level. Adding to this multilevel living, straight from the Hong Kong handbook, is the new Adrift Mare restaurant.

We had expected the food at Bouchon, the latest addition to the fine dining panoply of Coral Gables, to be nothing less than superb. Chef Thomas Keller is, after all, considered one of the top masters of French cuisine in the country — the first American male chef to be designated a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, among other accolades. What we did not anticipate was the experience of being there.
