Do people know what translators do? Well, as the name suggests, they translate. But what does that mean, exactly? Even translators’ definitions of translation vary, so how likely is it that non-translators understand our work? The Long Form is the debut novel by the award-winning writer and translator Kate Briggs. Published in 2023, it narrates a day in the life of a mother caring for her baby girl and trying to find time to read Tom Jones, and considers the relationship between what she and her child are doing, their experiences of time, and what it means to write fiction.
