Last night eight of us gathered to enjoy the quizmaster skills and hospitality of one of our members. There were five rounds, ten questions in each in the following categories:-CulinaryGeographyLiteratureAnimal KingdomMiscellaneousSome questions met with incredulity, all with interest. We’re impressed that our quizmaster knows so much – all compiled from her own head. Lively minds were well exercised on some of the questions.

Eight of us in person were joined by three on Zoom. It was lovely to see that they were able to join in, despite their health adventures. We discussed “Patch Work: A Life Amongst Clothes” by Claire Wilcox. Claire Wilcox visited the V&A Library as a child and loved it. Later she spent over 20 years at the V&A Museum, where she was a major curator of fashion and has significantly restyled its offering.

Well, I think we lived up to our reputation as “lively-minded women” yesterday evening!We had watched the film “Joy (2024)” together 2 weeks earlier, in a full home cinema experience (thanks to the daughter of one of our members) and were engrossed, not even pausing for refreshments (also because we didn’t how to switch it off!). “Joy” tells the story of the early days of the development of IVF and its team of 3 pioneers. We regarded the film as a good story.

We had a good belly laugh last night. What a tonic for the New Year!It was “in the way our reviewer told them” that drew our mirth. If our host’s neighbours were listening, they would have thought that Gun Island by Amitav Ghosh was a humorous book and not one about climate change, people trafficking and natural disasters. We enjoyed an evening discussing the numerous coincidences, many characters and storylines we had encountered in this month’s book.
