Love, Rage & Solidarity, a new solo exhibition by Galway-based artist and filmmaker Treasa O’Brien will open at the city’s Galway Arts Centre this Saturday, May 24, and will run until June 29 in the Dominick Street venue. The show features sculptures, photos, drawings, installations and films on themes of ecology, community, (de)colonisation, migration, identity, belonging, feminism, folk ritual and the inter-connectedness of people.

One of the most popular strands of the annual Galway International Arts Festival is the First Thought Talks, a series that explores the issues and challenges facing the world. Topics this July will include Trump’s presidency; the wars in Gaza and Ukraine; the importance of kindness in the health system; the growth of conspiracy theories, an imbalance in the GAA, political trauma and injustice; autism and talent; the challenge of climate transition, and human creativity.

The new novel from Booker longlisted author Elaine Feeney, Let Me Go Mad in My Own Way, is due out next week and will be launched in Kennys’ Bookshop in Galway City next Tuesday, May 27, at 6pm. Novelist and poet Elaine will be interviewed by Sarah Kenny of the bookshop and tickets are free. This is the third novel from Athenry woman Elaine, who is also the author of four collections of poetry.

Arts Week with Judy MurphyThere aren’t many towns in Ireland that can boast of having two winners of the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award, a prestigious prize for Irish poets awarded by St Thomas University of Minnesota, USA. Luke Morgan laughs and says “Oughterard can”. The winner of this year’s award, Luke is referring to himself and to previous recipient Louis de Paor, who is originally from Cork but a longterm resident of Oughterard.
