Grocery stores weren’t on every corner, and sometimes a person’s existence depended on what could be produced in the family garden. In more recent years, gardening has become a popular hobby. Interest in the hobby has increased, due in part to COVID. More time was spent at home, and an obvious choice was to garden. Enjoying nature’s sights and sounds can create a whole new world for the gardener.

    I’ve written about restaurants long enough to accept that this job has some perks. Checking out the newly remodeled and rebranded steakhouse on the top floor of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa is at the top of the perks list. Carvers on 19, formerly known as McGill’s, first opened in the casino in 2004 and moved up to the 19th floor of the newly constructed Hard Rock Tower in 2010.

    I’m not afraid to try a restaurant based solely on the potential of its nachos, which was precisely my mission with the “trash can” nachos at Misfit Kitchen, a new contemporary gastrolounge in the Tulsa Arts District. A friend and I chose the downtown spot for a pre-concert meal before The Pretenders’ July 31 show at Cain’s Ballroom. But whatever the occasion — pre-show, pre-Drillers game, date night, girls night, etc. — Misfit Kitchen should be on your list.

    By Judy AllenSucculents are plants that have thickened, fleshy parts used to retain water in arid conditions. Gardeners grow them because of their varied, striking, unusual appearance, as well as their ability to thrive with relatively little care. Many plant families include succulents. It seems as if it would be easy to grow succulents by putting them in soil, give them a little water and put them in the sun, but it isn’t quite that easy. Succulents can be a challenge.
