One of the organizers of the Monastic Land Stewardship series serves on the board of the Brandt Oyster River Hermitage Society. He asked me some months ago to spread the word about the contemplative-in-residence program initiated by that organization, which allows individuals of any faith background to spend three months to a year nurturing their contemplative practice.

Before the official start of autumn on Sept. 22 there’s a special season that many Christians – including us at the Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude – will be celebrating. It’s the Season of Creation. A brief bit of history: “Sept. 1 was proclaimed as a Day of Prayer for Creation for the Eastern Orthodox Church by Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I in 1989,” according to the 2024 Celebration Guide, which can be found on the Season of Creation website.

For me, the Season of Creation contains a lot of surprises. The first: why it's observed in the days closest to autumn (in the northern hemisphere), when this half of the planet is in the process of moving toward dormancy. But, then, as I thought about it, the southern hemisphere is in the throes of spring at the same time, so we just need to remember that this planet has different cycles of seasons. Second: the Season of Creation is not necessarily a recent development.
