Yet, a hiring freeze on seasonal workers and recent firings of key staff have gutted an already-stretched-thin agency, putting on hold critical work in water quality, environmental restoration and forest fuels reduction projects while also diminishing the forest service's capacity to manage the millions of visitors who come to Lake Tahoe every year - especially on the Fourth of July.

The Lake Tahoe developer who planned to build a Waldorf Astoria on the old Tahoe Biltmore site has run into yet another financial predicament that puts the entire project in jeopardy. EKN Development, a Newport Beach-based developer, received its second notice of default within the last year for an $82 million loan on the project. The filing means the Waldorf Astoria planned for North Lake Tahoe's Crystal Bay is at a standstill, once again.

Two abandoned cables containing lead lie at the bottom of Lake Tahoe, have been lying there for decades, and will continue to lie there, likely until a contentious lawsuit that pits a publicly traded corporation against a group of environmental activists is resolved in court. AT&T had plans in place to remove the cables last fall.
