To reproduce, male smallmouth bass build nests and then court and spawn with females. Whereas females leave their broods after spawning, the males remain for the next 4–6 weeks to protect their offspring. The overall number of offspring that survive is directly correlated with the number of males that successfully complete their brood defense.
