Children and young people are our future workforce, and in a future where our society needs to transition to a net zero economy, having those children and young people get an appropriate education, access to applicable work experience, and have clear routes to employment is vital. However, according to a 2022 report by the Green Alliance, there is an enormous green skills gap that equates to more than 2 million jobs over the net-zero transition period to 2050. This gap needs to be filled.

On October 9th, the New River Valley Regional Commission board of directors, comprised of elected officials and citizen appointees across the region, hosted a dinner event at the Center for the Arts in Floyd, VA to honor the 2024 award recipients. Approximately 100 local government elected officials, state and federal representatives, and local government planning commission chairs were in attendance.

The NRV Recovery Ecosystem leadership team had the opportunity to meet in person this month and tour New River Valley Community Services’ 401 Peer Center in Radford. The 401 Peer Center functions as a community center for those in recovery and had 400 participants last quarter. Participants have access to multiple models of recovery programming, social activities, wifi and computers, as well as food, showers and restrooms.

This summer, Regional Commission staff members have been actively engaging with the New River Valley community to promote outreach for various local and regional projects. In Floyd County, the team connected with residents and visitors at the Floyd Farmers Market, Small Town Summer concerts, and the Agriculture Fair to gather feedback for the Comprehensive Plan.

You can get fresh veggies and the details on how to improve your commute. RIDE Solutions is heading out to your local farmers markets and spreading the word about how to find a better commute. This summer and fall and next spring we’ll be talking with market shoppers about the benefits of carpooling and how to take charge of their commutes with the ConnectingVA app. This past year commuters using the app to log their trips reduced 153,256 vehicle miles and 8,308 trips.

At the August Regional Commission meeting the NRV Recovery Ecosystem was presented the Robert M. deVoursney Best Practices Award from the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions. The Best Practices Award recognizes organizations that have initiated innovative regional activities which have contributed significantly to the effectiveness of a region.
