In the past two months, I’ve found myself thinking back to an essay Ursula K. Le Guin posted on her blog in November 2016. It was one of her last long essays, and she wrote it at a time when she—like many people now—was shocked, concerned for her country’s future, and wondering how best to respond.

Children and young people are our future workforce, and in a future where our society needs to transition to a net zero economy, having those children and young people get an appropriate education, access to applicable work experience, and have clear routes to employment is vital. However, according to a 2022 report by the Green Alliance, there is an enormous green skills gap that equates to more than 2 million jobs over the net-zero transition period to 2050. This gap needs to be filled.

The New River Valley Regional Commission extends our support to communities, families, individuals, and businesses in the region impacted by Hurricane Helene. Historically, the Regional Commission works to secure state and federal funds to deliver meaningful projects to communities.

On October 9th, the New River Valley Regional Commission board of directors, comprised of elected officials and citizen appointees across the region, hosted a dinner event at the Center for the Arts in Floyd, VA to honor the 2024 award recipients. Approximately 100 local government elected officials, state and federal representatives, and local government planning commission chairs were in attendance.

The NRV Recovery Ecosystem leadership team had the opportunity to meet in person this month and tour New River Valley Community Services’ 401 Peer Center in Radford. The 401 Peer Center functions as a community center for those in recovery and had 400 participants last quarter. Participants have access to multiple models of recovery programming, social activities, wifi and computers, as well as food, showers and restrooms.
