Standard economics is viewed as a value free subject based on mathematical models and statistical techniques. Often economics students are lost in the haze of technical details and are not equipped to address pressing real world issues of ecological damage, climate change, economic inequality, worker precarity, future of work, and post pandemic rising cost of living.

Recently, veteran actor Shaan Shahid posted a defence of his shirtless pic under a shower, that he had earlier shared on social media. His argument was something to the effect that men are endowed with strength and women with beauty, that he wants to inspire men of his age bracket with fitness, and that we live in a world where men are allowed to go shirtless.

Right after 7 October, President Biden made it a point to visit Prime Minister Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, becoming the first US president to visit Israel in wartime. A most outlandish claim was made by Israel’s ambassador to the UN about the connection of that key international institution to Palestinian movement Hamas. The Israeli ambassador then went a step further and said the UN was a terrorist organisation. He was upset that the UN General Assembly voted 143-9 in favour of granting more rights to the Palestinians at the UN. Israel is opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state.

Not every nation has a state. The Kurds, for example, do not have a state of their own and their numbers are distributed across several states. So, what makes Zionists uniquely entitled to a state? Even if we do concede a right to exist for a Zionist state, why should the Zionist entity be situated in Palestine, a state with a defined territory in which Jews, Christians, Muslims and others have been coexisting peacefully for centuries?

The world is quite aware of the historic brutality, oppression, and dispossession that European colonialists perpetrated against those they deemed lesser humans. From the colonial plantations of slavery where black bodies were eviscerated and dehumanised to the inglorious famine of Bengal, all the atrocities carried the implicit excuse that the Europeans were more civilised than the savages of their colonies, which they themselves were savagely exploiting and dispossessing.

In an unprecedented criticism of its close ally, one it helped arm, the United States has observed that it was "reasonable to assess" that over the past seven months, Israel used weapons provided by Washington in Gaza in a way that was inconsistent with international humanitarian law. However, the report by the US State Department, released Friday, did not offer any "conclusive findings", essentially nullifying the report and thus failed to block further weapons shipments to Israel.
