Ducati chucked its 955cc Superquadro desmo engine in the bin for all of its V2 models—the Panigale V2, the Multistrada V2, and now the Streetfighter V2—replacing it with a new 890cc 90-degree V-2 with spring valve actuation that makes less peak horsepower. Thirty-three less horsepower. What kind of un-Ducati-like strategy is this: less cubes and less power? Well, on the 2025 Streetfighter V2 S, there’s also less weight—40 pounds, Ducati claims.

I’m following a Toyota hatchback at Bosch’s Shiobara, Japan, proving ground with the adaptive cruise control set. My prototype Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) equipped 2025 KTM Super Adventure S follows at a safe distance adjusting speed as the driver speeds up and slows down. This is nothing new; radar-based adaptive cruise control made it to production on the 2021 Multistrada V4 S, followed by several more models from Yamaha, Triumph, BMW, Kawasaki, and KTM.

No matter how it goes verbatim, the sentiment perfectly sums up six days of rally racing on a 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE in Baja, Mexico. There were unbelievable highs punched out by the lowest of the lows, which were then replaced by more shining moments. Rinse and repeat for 144 hours.

Suzuki’s V-Strom models have evoked the memory of the Hamamatsu brand’s DR Big adventure and rally racers with a stubby beak, striking color combos, and similar yet modern shape since a redesign of the 2014 V-Strom 1000. That got me thinking after looking at a photo of a particular DR Big raced in the 1990 Paris-Dakar Rally: Could I build a modern, multicylinder Suzuki rally racer worthy of the DR Big legend?
