No one ever wants to lose to their rivals, especially in a region championship game. It’s even worse when it’s a night full of “ifs, wouldas, couldas, and shouldas” as Thomson football coach Michael Youngblood described Friday night’s 47-35 loss to Burke County in a game that decided the Region 4-AA crown. But if it’s any consolation, Thomson looks poised for a deep postseason run — and that’s saying something, considering how the season began with two straight losses.

This was the first time the Jaguars have lost a game in this “tournament” since the 2019-20 season. To add to the sting, the Jaguars held double-digit leads in both games and were not able to make it out with a win.

Burke County won its 10th region title in program history and its first ever in Class AA with its 47-35 win over Thomson on Friday, November 8. In what started out as a close, back-and-forth contest turned into a much more decisive win for the home team Bears, and coach Franklin Stephens could tell his guys wanted it. “I think we just had a little bit more want-to than the other team,” Stephens said.
