Agritechnica, Europe’s major agricultural machinery show, has returned to its routine of being held every two years at Hanover in Germany, with the German Agricultural Society (DLG) claiming that stand space is already sold out. The organisation expects over 2,700 exhibitors, spread throughout 23 halls, to be present, 65% of which will be from outside of Germany.

Sometimes, just restoring a tractor is not good enough for a creative mind – the project has to be taken further, much further, until a true masterpiece of engineering is turned out that defies logic and maybe sense, but at the same time is tremendous fun. Such is the articulated Massey Ferguson 135 built by Co. Kerry farmer Norman. Wherever the tractor goes, it draws tremendous interest and rightly so.

Soil compaction is a subject that is now widely recognised and addressed, yet a related issue that does not get quite the same attention is soil smearing by tractor wheels. Compaction is considered the vertical displacement of soil particles as they press against one another, collapsing the pores and excluding air from the spaces.

The Soilcrates project has issued a list of novel and established practices that farmers and growers participating in the project may wish to implement on their farms in a bid to improve soil health. While trials that are eligible for grants through the scheme are limited to certain areas in the west of Ireland, the catalogue does provide a good summary of soil management methods that are applicable throughout the country. Interest in soil health is increasing as farmers seek to reduce inputs.

Sky Agriculture, the brand of machinery better known to the farming world under its previous name of Sulky, has recently changed its sales and distribution arrangements here in Ireland. From now on it will be distributed by IAM Agricultural Machinery of Co. Kilkenny, which has been appointed as the exclusive importer and distributor of the full Sky Agriculture range.
