    Southerly winds are expected to increase sustained near 20 mph gusting over 30 mph for Wednesday afternoon throughout the Red River Valley and much of the area. Relative humidity values are also expected to remain in the teens to twenties percent. In combination with wind, low humidity, and such dry fall conditions, fire conditions will reach critical to near critical fire weather conditions.

    On this day in 2019, most of the state was dealing with a blizzard and winter storm. Could history repeat itself? Well it could, but not this year. No snow is foreseen for the next couple of weeks and is unlikely through the rest of the month. However just a few years ago from October 10th through the 13th, a large storm system struck the state leaving behind 1-3 feet of snow in north central and north eastern North Dakota. Rain quickly turned to snow as a strong cold front rushed across the state.

    Being only the third hurricane in the Gulf Of Mexico to ever reach category 5 strength twice it is also the 42 category 5 hurricane. Milton also reached the fifth lowest pressure recorded in the center of a hurricane at 897 millibars (mb). Hurricanes are not however categorized by pressure, they are ranked based on maximum sustained winds within the eye wall of the storm.

    Near critical fire conditions are back as relative humidity (RH) values drop back into the 20% range this Wednesday afternoon. Southerly winds have picked up between 10-20 mph gusting to 30 mph within the Red River Valley and surrounding area leading. As high temperatures reach the 80’s on Thursday (10/10/24) RH will drop even lower into the teens to 20’s% values over a much wider area. Winds on Thursday are also expected to be breezy to windy as another cold front approaches.
