Southerly winds are expected to increase sustained near 20 mph gusting over 30 mph for Wednesday afternoon throughout the Red River Valley and much of the area. Relative humidity values are also expected to remain in the teens to twenties percent. In combination with wind, low humidity, and such dry fall conditions, fire conditions will reach critical to near critical fire weather conditions.

On this day in 2019, most of the state was dealing with a blizzard and winter storm. Could history repeat itself? Well it could, but not this year. No snow is foreseen for the next couple of weeks and is unlikely through the rest of the month. However just a few years ago from October 10th through the 13th, a large storm system struck the state leaving behind 1-3 feet of snow in north central and north eastern North Dakota. Rain quickly turned to snow as a strong cold front rushed across the state.

Being only the third hurricane in the Gulf Of Mexico to ever reach category 5 strength twice it is also the 42 category 5 hurricane. Milton also reached the fifth lowest pressure recorded in the center of a hurricane at 897 millibars (mb). Hurricanes are not however categorized by pressure, they are ranked based on maximum sustained winds within the eye wall of the storm.

Near critical fire conditions are back as relative humidity (RH) values drop back into the 20% range this Wednesday afternoon. Southerly winds have picked up between 10-20 mph gusting to 30 mph within the Red River Valley and surrounding area leading. As high temperatures reach the 80’s on Thursday (10/10/24) RH will drop even lower into the teens to 20’s% values over a much wider area. Winds on Thursday are also expected to be breezy to windy as another cold front approaches.

After a record warm and dry September, another record may fall this week. The record high this Thursday 10/10/24 is 86 degrees for Fargo set back in 2003. I am currently forecasting a high near 86 degrees. Some upper-level haze may prevent us from getting there but it will be close. After record flirting warmth on Thursday, we will cool down for Friday behind a cold front back into the 60s and 50s 40s for a couple of days.

A statewide fire emergency has been issued by Governor Burgum as 67 fires have been reported just this week burning 3500+ acres in North Dakota. September was a record-dry month for us in Fargo and very dry across much of North Dakota and Minnesota. Near critical fire conditions are expected this Saturday with low relative humidity, strong winds, and dry conditions across the State.

A freeze warning has been issued for portions of Northern North Dakota and Northern Minnesota. Frost advisories have also been issued for much of the Red River Valley and areas of Lakes Country and Central Minnesota. Tonight temperatures will drop into the 30s with patchy frost possible across much of the area with freezing temperatures possible found to the north. A saving grace may be southerly winds that are expected to slowly increase into the morning of Friday.

Patchy areas of frost will be possible early Friday morning as winds go light with clear skies. The first potential frost risk has finally arrived for the first week of October. Thursday night and Friday morning skies are expected to clear with calm winds. Similar to winter when the wind is light and skies are clear temperatures plummet very quickly, especially if you have a good fresh snowpack. Now we do not have any snow but the same process of traditional cooling will take place.

This September has been one for the record books with many days in the 80 or higher. Fargo reported 13 consecutive days at 80 degrees or greater tieing the record for the most consecutive days at 80 degrees or warmer set back in 1908 at 13 days. This stretch of nice weather lasted from the 8th to the 20th of September 2024. Since then more days in the 80s have been reported in Fargo ND.
