From August 26-30, 2024, Earthworks accompanied Mexican not-for-profit organizations CEMDA (Mexican Environmental Law Center) and Conexiones Climáticas on a visit to communities affected by an ever expanding oil and gas infrastructure in Campeche and Tabasco, in the Gulf of Mexico. The OGI images captured during the recent visit to the region show a great deal of air pollution from the broad array of interconnected infrastructure.

So much happened this weekend at COP28 in Dubai. The World Leaders Summit wrapped up on Saturday. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber closed-out this part of the conference announcing a variety of voluntary pledges made by governments and corporations, seeking fan-fare of great accomplishment. The reality though is that pledges are fine, but they mean very little when the effects of the climate crisis are being felt now.

The 2-day World Leaders summit ended Saturday. But negotiators, activists and advocates remain to determine what outcomes of this year’s COP. Today, Earthworks and others kept up the drum-beat to get the phase-out commitment. At an event featuring the Attorney General of California, Rob Bonta, the AG spoke about holding industry accountable for false claims that somehow the causers of the climate crisis are also the solution. World Leaders walked the grand open-air, flag, and tree-lined Al Wasl Plaza in the Blue Zone in Expo City, Dubai, today to kick off the World Leaders Summit. If there was any doubt yesterday, it is certain today. Whether or not world leaders commit to a fossil fuel phase-out is the BIG QUESTION of COP28. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened today’s summit He did not parse words: “The 1.5°C warming limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning fossil fuels. Not reduce. Not abate.

Today was a short day, but an important one, at the global climate conference in Dubai. It was a day of agenda-setting. The conference started at 1 pm local time with three very different messages from the opening session. The former COP27 President provided a reality check that the science shows the world is NOT doing enough.
