The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, which serves as the headquarters for weather services in southern States and two Union Territories, will strengthen its observation network across south India. The RMC has come a long way since its inception as an astronomical observatory in 1792. It has expanded its horizon and improved weather services over the decades. It later became a part of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is completing 150 years on January 15.

Cholavaram reservoir, one of Chennai’s drinking water resources that was heavily impacted by cyclones and extreme weather events in the past, will be completely rejuvenated by this year end. The Water Resources Department has sought funds to execute the second phase of work to strengthen the bund of the reservoir and reduce flood risk in the downstream areas.

After many years, the iconic Centenary Auditorium on the University of Madras’ Chepauk campus will undergo a major renovation. The Public Works Department (PWD)’s Building Centre and Conservation Division, which is involved in the restoration of historical structures, will begin work to renovate the auditorium in January. The venue holds significance due to hosting several important government functions and swearing-in ceremonies.
