Published 2:33 pm Friday, June 6, 2025 The St. Helens Library summer reading challenge is kicking off next week, encouraging community members of all ages to read with games, prizes and more. From June 16 to Aug. 9, community members can participate in summer reading programming for children younger than 13, teens and adults. This year’s theme is “Level Up at Your Library,” and the programs will incorporate games and puzzles to promote reading. A library card is not required to participate.

Following the resignation of former police Chief Brian Greenway in January, the city has been searching for a new person to officially head its police department. Interim Police Chief Joe Hogue appeared to be the obvious choice after serving as the department’s temporary leader since October, when the city placed Greenway on administrative leave.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, the city will recognize the completion of the first phase of its riverfront redevelopment project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Columbia View Circle, located at the intersection of Strand Street and Cowlitz Street.
