A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and Earth align, allowing the moon to pass into Earth's shadow, according to NASA. Lunar eclipses are often called "blood moons" because a red hue can be produced when the Earth's shadow covers the moon. The coloration happens because any sunlight not blocked by Earth is filtered through a thick slice of Earth’s atmosphere as it approaches the lunar surface, according to NASA. The full lunar eclipse was March 13 and 14 and lasted 6 hours and 2 minutes.

The island serves as a crucial nesting habitat for brown pelicans and over 130 other bird species. INDIAN RIVER COUNTY − America’s first national wildlife refuge near Sebastian is a small island in the Indian River Lagoon, surrounded by over 5,400 acres of protected waters and lands, known as Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

There aren’t too many places around the Treasure Coast that serve true native Florida cuisine such as frog legs, gator tail, catfish and swamp cabbage; and where sweet tea is served in a mason jar and each table is dressed with a bottle of hot pepper vinegar. Marsh Landing Restaurant is warm and inviting and on Thursdays they push some of their tables, covered in newspaper clippings from the Fellsmere Farmer and Fellsmere Tribune, to the side for live Bluegrass music.

Hurricane Milton ravaged Central Florida as a Category 3 storm, then moved across the state, destroying homes, causing floods and spawning tornadoes. Hurricane season is coming to a close. Three hurricanes made landfall in Florida during the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30, with the busiest months between August and October. Hurricane Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida, about 7 a.m. Aug. 5, 2024, as a Category 1 storm.
