The announcement of Jeremy Corbyn’s win in Islington North was met with whoops from his army of young supporters, as an “unlucky mate” rang out in the hall from one of them before the size of the Labour candidate’s defeat was acknowledged. Praful Nargund, a 33-year-old Labour councillor and entrepreneur, lagged some 7,000 votes behind Corbyn, propelling the veteran to beat the party he led into the last general election.

In a former life, as a sports journalist covering England over several football World Cups, I was used to disappointment. It always starts with high expectations: a golden age of players who are the best in a generation, and ends with a very low hope-to-goal ratio. The Women’s World Cup is a bit different. Refreshingly so, actually. Back in 2015, a small group of us headed off to Canada with little expectation and a lot of determination to make sure the competition got the coverage it deserved.
