The place was hard to get to - from Tokyo, it takes several trains and taxis, and then a long drive into the countryside.

The first five episodes of "Animal" featured creatures that are easy to love: Walnut, puffins, manatees, ferrets and the poor extinct Japanese wolf. But the more I thought about this, the more it seemed unfair. We can't just go around respecting animals because they're cute. What about all the many millions of beings who are slimy, lumpy, stinky, freaky, ugly, bitey, etc.? Don't they deserve our attention and respect? Shouldn't they be seen and encountered?
