The Women’s Executive Network has announced its annual Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards, celebrating the achievements of leaders across the country. This year’s theme was “Be Bold,” with more than 500 women nominated. Among this year’s winners are five scholars from the University of Manitoba, including Hope Anderson. “I like to think that a powerful woman is one who has the wherewithal to bring out the best in those she leads, mentors, and serves,” Dr. Anderson said.

In a third-year earth sciences course at MacEwan University, students train their microscopes on small plant and animal subfossils collected from soil, sediment, bone and other samples. By going beyond rote work with prepared slides, students get hands-on experience with sample analysis and the chance to discover clues about how the environment has changed over thousands of years.

The FirstNet network, operated by the FirstNet Authority as an independent agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), enables the fire service, EMS, and law enforcement to do their jobs more safely and effectively, no matter where they are located. The network is exclusive to emergency services, giving responders the ability to access the resources they need in real time as they respond to incidents.

Confidence and the ability to stay calm under pressure – those two attributes are what Maya Turner says make a good football kicker, and two attributes that helped her make Canadian football history. “If others see your confidence … then they’ll believe in you as well,” said the 21-year-old athlete. Last September, Ms. Turner, a former NCAA Division 1 soccer player, became the first woman to not only play in a regular season university football game but also score points.
