Christians in the Coweta community have been preparing for Easter Sunday in various ways for weeks. Holy week leads up to Easter, which celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. The earliest recorded observance of an Easter celebration dates back to the second century, although the commemoration of Jesus’ Resurrection likely occurred earlier, according to Britannica.

Ignite the Fire, in collaboration with local churches, organizations and law enforcement, will host its annual Spring Community Outreach on Saturday, April 19. The event will be held at the Central Educational Center gymnasium on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Newnan. Last November, Ignite the Fire provided more than 100 Thanksgiving meal boxes and served approximately 150 hot meals during its fall outreach. Attendees also received free clothes, household goods and other items.

Newnan Chapel United Methodist Church was full as Cowetans gathered for one of the last Lenten services. The service was held on Wednesday, April 2. The Lenten services have been held in Newnan for several years. Each service is held at a different church, with a pastor from another church bringing the message. This year, the offering will be given to Coweta Samaritan Clinic, which provides free primary and specialty healthcare services for uninsured Coweta County adults.

Cowetan Mrs. Jimmie Mae Strickland McKee recently celebrated her 90th birthday with five generations. McKee was born on March 29, 1935, in Coweta County. McKee has four children: two sons, Jimmie Lee Favors and Anthony Favors; two daughters, Katrina Melson, Phyllis McClendon. Melson said her mother’s memory comes and goes, but that didn’t start until she was in her late 80s. Melson said she and her sister take turns taking care of their mother.
