Local pastor the Rev. Dr. K.G. Bailey is using his heart transplant journey to inspire not only those who are ill but also leaders. Bailey released his debut book, “Heartbeat Leadership: Resilient Principles for Business and Community Leaders,” on Feb. 28 on Amazon. Journey to a new heartBailey said he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 10 years ago, but no one knew except him and his wife.

Fr. Winston Arthur is the new rector for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newnan, and Arthur said he is enjoying getting to know his new parish and the Coweta community. Arthur, a native of Barbados, said he was ordained in ministry in July 2016. He never thought he’d be a minister, although he was always active in church, Arthur said. “My mother would say yes I knew,” he said. “When I was 11 years old in Barbados, I told our pastor I wanted to be a preacher. My wife would say yes, also.

Former assistant principal Lawanada James encouraged Arnall Middle School students to appreciate the differences of others, show kindness and respect, be thankful and strive for excellence during the annual diversity program. The program was held on Valentine’s morning. The theme of the event was “Blessed to be unknighted in excellence.”James encouraged students to think about three things in their lives that made them feel blessed. “Take a moment to appreciate those things,” James said.

First Baptist Church of Newnan is hosting its annual Jerry Walker Widow & Widowers’ Valentine Banquet, a way for those without their spouse to celebrate the holiday of love. The banquet will be held at FBC on Thursday, Feb.13 from 6-8 p.m.The banquet was started by Cowetan, then Susie Walker, now Susie Walker-Powers in 2017. Walker-Powers lost her husband, the Rev. William Gerald “Jerry” Walker in June 2016. Walker was a pastor at First Baptist Church in downtown Newnan for over 30 years.

A survivor’s bold act of awareness is now a powerful stage production shining a spotlight on domestic violence. Newnan native Tiffany Graham’s stage play, “The Price of Love,” will premiere during Valentine’s weekend at the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium in downtown Newnan. Graham, a domestic violence survivor, said it took time to come to terms with her journey, a period she calls her “self-discovery” phase. “I found myself at times reflecting on things and people that hurt me,” Graham said.
