IT'S three weeks to Christmas. The decorations, inside and outside of the houses and shops and the Christmas trees in all their finery are everywhere as we prepare for the festive season. It puts me in mind of another Christmas which was not so jolly but where the spirt of friendship and family rose above the place we were in.

The death has taken place of Dr. Catherine "Kitty" Thornton at the age of 93.
The longtime Queens, New York resident and Mayo native was married to the late John Thornton, for many years the editor of the Irish Echo. John died in 2004.
The obituary for Kitty, published on the website of the Lynch Funeral home in Sunnyside, Queens reads: Catherine Thornton died December 2, 2024 at her home in Woodside.

Irish American Writers & Artists’ November salon packed the private room at The Ellington restaurant on Broadway and 105th Street on the 19th of the month. Writer Anthony Murphy (call him “Murph”) organized and hosted a terrific, diverse program of poetry, storytelling, fiction and music.
Two of our writers had personal stories set on hot summer days. Mike Veve recounted an incident on the subway heading downtown from Inwood.

Ireland’s Future is preparing to speak at two upcoming Irish-American gatherings regarding preparation for a referendum on Irish Unity.
Said a statement: "On 22nd November Ireland’s Future Board member Andrée Murphy will address the Ancient Order of Hibernians Freedom For All Ireland Christmas Appeal Dinner in Albany.
"This annual event brings together significant figures from across the East Coast of America to support organisations involved in building reconciliation and peace in Ireland.

Two and a half years ago, Katie Taylor survived a brutal mid-fight battering at the hands of Amanda Serrano to escape with a split points decision and her undisputed lightweight crown in a historic scrap at a sold-out Madison Square Garden. This Friday, Taylor and Serrano meet again in their eagerly awaited rematch, at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Even though Samhain had passed a few days earlier, some spirits remained to join the women of Nollaig Na mBan NY’s celebration. The group, founded by Maura Mulligan, celebrates the Celtic fire festivals, and raises money for selected women’s charitable groups. Currently we donate to the Ukrainian National Women’s League.
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we met at the Laurels and enjoyed the Irish hospitality of “two lads from the same village” who opened their restaurant/pub on East 14th Street.

As early morning April showers faded into memory, an afternoon sunlight stretched its limbs across Washington Square Park, falling gently upon the door of Glucksman Ireland House, in New York’s Greenwich Village.
And within that NYU house of history, literature, language and learning, a scaifte mór of all ages and abilities gathered to celebrate, sing, and speak the Irish language, during its annual Lá na Gaeilge.
