John Finucane, son of murdered Belfast attorney Pat Finucane and a member of the British parliament for North Belfast, will be in the U.S. next week for a series of engagements in Washington, D.C., New York City and Rockland County, NY. Finucane will be in the nation's capital on Monday, January 27 to speak at a meeting of the Irish Unity People’s Assembly: Diaspora. He will do the same on Thursday, January 30, in Rockland County.

“King” Callum Walsh and “Deadly” Dean Sutherland came face to face for the first time in Manhattan last week to begin the countdown for their St. Patrick’s Day eve scrap on March 16 at Madison Square Garden. Both fighters were brimming with confidence. Hailed as the fastest rising star in boxing, the undefeated and world-ranked Walsh [12-0, 10 KOs] will be defending his WBC super welterweight Continental Americas title for the third time at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

It seems to me that every salon takes on a different vibe or personality, that is unique of that one evening, and not to be repeated, inimitable. Irish American Writers & Artists salon at Slainte Oakland had such an evening in early January. Having a place to share prose, poetry and music can be a needed balm to ease a heavy heart. All artists expressed the profound sadness of the wildfire devastation that is occurring in Los Angeles County.

Irish American Writers & Artists’ November salon packed the private room at The Ellington restaurant on Broadway and 105th Street on the 19th of the month. Writer Anthony Murphy (call him “Murph”) organized and hosted a terrific, diverse program of poetry, storytelling, fiction and music. Two of our writers had personal stories set on hot summer days. Mike Veve recounted an incident on the subway heading downtown from Inwood.
