No! It is not time to retire the term ‘deaths of despair’ [1]. The concept is needed more than ever today in countries where drug-related deaths remain at high levels. It draws attention to the need for comprehensive public health and social policies to reverse the damaging upstream conditions, which form the context for these deaths. It may be that the idea has been misappropriated and is unhelpful in a clinical context.

It was my closest friend from college, sharing a TikTok — the 2025 equivalent of sending a sympathy card or a "thinking of you.""Millennials bringing out the Recession Pop Playlist after seeing the stock market crash," the video read, as a creator danced to the 2009 hit "Down" by Jay Sean.

Keywordschildbirth, HIV, South African women, birthingAbstractThe birthing time is often one of great joy and anticipation, and is a significant juncture in any woman’s life. If Olympic-level gymnastics wasn’t impressive enough already, wait until you learn how narrow the balance beam really is. When you watch athletes competing on the beam at the Paris Olympics, know that the platform they’re jumping and flipping on is only 10 centimeters wide (or roughly four inches). For reference, that’s smaller (!!) than an iPhone turned to landscape mode, and only a little wider than the average credit card.

After a surprisingly early elimination at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the US women’s national soccer team (USWNT) came to the Paris Olympics with their eye on redemption. And so far, that goal looks like it’s within reach, with the women’s soccer team demonstrating what coach Emma Hayes referred to as a “high-level game,” per USAToday. Of course, the USWNT has another goal too – the same goal as everyone who’s at the Olympics: to medal.

I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear the president-elect say this. We have a long fight ahead of us—but it starts with good leadership.

Joe Biden @JoeBiden

We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments — hugging a grandchild, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us — until we get this virus under control.
