The Bloomfield City Council scheduled four public hearings last week at its April 3 meeting. Three of those hearings are set for the April 17 council meeting beginning at 6 p.m. at the Bloomfield Public Library. A fourth hearing is set for May 1. The first hearing is on the rezoning of parcel #01003700 from Residential (R-1) to Commercial (C-1) for a new dental office. That particular parcel is located at 305 W. Grant, across the street to the east from the USDA building.

Harris said tax reform not likely to happen this yearState Representatives Austin Harris (District 26) and Hans Wilz (District 27) as well as State Senator Cherielynn Westrich (District 13) appeared at a League of Women Voters forum in Ottumwa Saturday morning. Each legislator spoke of legislation they have been working on during the 2025 session.

Davis County’s daycare services will be severely cut at the end of the school year when Wigwam Daycare and Preschool reduces enrollment and staff. Owner Traci Wiegand said the number of children served by Wigwam will be reduced from 145 to 60 and staff numbers will be cut from 32 down to 11. Wiegand said the reason for the cutback is she has chosen “quality” daycare over “quantity.”“We have to have quality staff, and they’re just not knocking at the door,” she said.

Several volunteers working to eliminate hunger in Davis County are worried whether current programs will be able to fulfill the nutritional needs of Davis County people in the future. Sandy Warning, manager of the Lord’s Cupboard; Lynn Townsend, Coordinator for the Mobile Food Bank in Bloomfield, and Jessica Wortmann, who orders food for the Bloomfield United Methodist Church’s nutrition projects, have all expressed concern about decreasing resources.

Rod Day, Director of Ancillary Services at Davis County Hospital & Clinics, reported to the board on March 17 that the hospital’s lab would be fully staffed with the addition of a new employee this week. Keeping the lab fully staffed has been a problem for DCHC for some time. Dr. Robert Floyd, on the other hand, reported the clinic has lost a scribe. “It’s unfortunate we’re having trouble filling those positions,” he said. “Some have gone on to med school and one became a podiatrist.
