Klaus instructs students on living a meaningful life Joni Helton, long-time kindergarten teacher at Davis County Elementary, will deliver the commencement address for the Davis County High School class of 2025. After retiring as a kindergarten teacher in the Davis County Schools in 2019, Helton has taught preschool at Wigwam Daycare and Preschool and served as a member of the Davis County School Board.
Mental health office to open in Bloomfield

Starting July 1, Bloomfield will have its own mental health care coordination office, an outreach initiative of Southern Iowa Mental Health Center (SIMHC) headquartered in Ottumwa. Lori Drummond, Director of Certified Community Behavioral Health Centers, said last week outreach offices are being opened in seven locations: Bloomfield, Fairfield, Keosauqua, Centerville, Albia, Oskaloosa, and Sigourney.
Students inspired by NFL’s Cooper DeJean

Cooper DeJean, NFL cornerback and punt returner for the Philadelphia Eagles, was in Bloomfield last week to inspire students in the Davis County Schools. DeJean, originally from Odebolt, played for the Iowa Hawkeyes and received All-American honors in 2023. In 2024 he was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the NFL draft.
Gingerich Greenhouse has new owners

Lynford and Laura Miller of Bloomfield purchased Gingerich Greenhouse from Herman and Bertha Gingerich on July 1, 2024. The business includes three different greenhouses with a total of 20,000 square feet including 5 bays that are gutter connected. The Millers took possession of the 30-year-old business on Jan. 1 of 2025 and moved into the nearby house during the afternoon of Jan. 18 after the Gingeriches moved out that morning.
Will dominates field events in SCC Meet

The Mustang boys’ track team put forth a strong performance May 6 and scored 170 team points, but still couldn’t come up with a South Central Conference championship. Davis County fell short by 28 points to a Knoxville team that posted 198 team points in the meet. Knoxville won 10 events while Davis County scored victories in five different events throughout the meet. The bright spot for Davis County in this meet was the work of senior Carter Will.
Warning, Smith finish third in SCC doubles

Schooley is third in singles divisionThe Lady Mustang tennis team finished second in the South Central Conference Tournament. The tournament was held in Knoxville on May 6. Knoxville won the tournament with 31 team points. Davis County was second with 15. Albia finished third with 14 points. Centerville was fourth with seven points. Clarke was fifth with six points and Chariton was sixth with wo points.
Lady Mustangs win SCC title

Conference champs! That’s right, the Lady Mustang track team brought home a South Central Conference Championship last week. The girls scored 149 team points and beat Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont by five and a half points to win the team title. The girls won that team title by winning just two events outright. The team used its depth in all other events to score points in multiple ways including several where two athletes finished in the scoring places.
Gov. Reynolds signs bill restricting cellphones in classroom

Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, public Iowa K-12 school districts will be required to set policies that, at minimum, ban the use of cellphones during class time under a law signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds Wednesday. The ban on cellphones during instructional periods was one of the governor’s top priorities heading into the 2025 legislative session. At a ceremony signing the measure into law, Reynolds said House File 782 will help improve Iowa students’ learning and mental health.
