    Holding the line Balusters are some of the more genteel musclemen of the building world, holding up porch railings and stair handrails and looking good while they do it. Unlike beams and studs and joists, the real structural foundation pieces that stay out of view and quietly do their backbreaking work, balusters are made to be seen. Part of their job, in fact, is adding some visual oomph to otherwise utilitarian features. How dull homes would look without them.

A new hour-long documentary by the Louisiana Architecture Foundation, “Ancestral Artistry: The Influence of Africans & Creoles of Color on Louisiana Architecture,” shines a light on how building practices and the master craftsmen who perfected them developed here by exploring the times that shaped the people.
