    Can we really see God at work? It’s a common question these days, especially in missional circles, and I suspect that you, like many others, want to see God at work—even long to—but the possibility often seems quite elusive. Can we really see God at work? I believe we can, because I believe the Spirit is present and active in every moment everywhere, inviting us to see—but not necessarily where and how we expect.

    How can I get to know my neighbors when we live miles apart in a rural area? I have frequently been asked this question in our “Joining God in the Neighborhood” workshops and learning communities. The rural context has unique challenges (as do other types of neighborhoods), yet God is at work wherever the Spirit has placed us or sent us (Jer. 29:4-7; Luke 10:7). But if we aren’t bumping into neighbors on the sidewalk or in our front yards, how are we meeting and getting to know them?

    “I could not, not see the image of a table set with tea in the midst of rubble. It had been in my mind for years,” explains Karen Tamminga-Paton, the Alberta artist whose art installation, Peacetalks, recently exhibited at Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre in British Columbia. Tamminga-Paton was beginning an artist’s residency in France with close to two dozen artists from around the world when war broke out in the Middle East.

    Over the next decade, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects there will be 193,100 openings for the registered nurse workforce each year. In Canada, a 2019 study forecast a shortage of 117,000 nurses by 2030. And a 2022 report by the International Council of Nurses estimates that 13 million more nurses will be required over the next decade.

    In February 2024, the Association of Theological Schools officially approved a partnership between Calvin Theological Seminary and Missional Training Center of Tempe, Ariz. The idea for Missional Training Center came from the Surge Network, a collaborative group of more than 100 churches formed in 2007 to plant churches, sponsor community outreach programs, and train lay leaders.
