I’d been standing outside our house at the top of Paseo Miramar in Pacific Palisades at 12:30 a.m. and was watching when Jerry and Emily, my neighbors, drove home from a New Year’s Eve Party. I pointed to the fire. He wasn’t particularly interested or concerned. “You know where that is?” he asked. “The Highlands,” I shrugged. “You’re right!” he said, and pulled into his garage, closing the door behind him.
