When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. – TecumsehAs I write this letter, it’s a warm, mid-September day, nearly 90 degrees. It’s hard to think about winter, which seems so far away. Although I’ve never particularly “warmed up” to winter’s chill, I do love the togetherness, the food, and the decorations. Autumn, on the other hand, is perfect to me.

Or fall, for those who don’t get as giddy as I do about state fairs. Livestock shows, rides, tractor and car shows, smoked turkey legs, craft shows…I love it all. For whatever reason, going to the fair always makes me feel connected to those who came before me. There’s something in the air that just feels traditional or unchanged.

I even enjoy the heat – bit of a necessity, being that I’m deep in East Texas and it’s pretty much always hot and humid. Some of the best parts of summer are the moments when I get to escape my normal day-to-day stuff and go fishing, hiking, or camping, but my absolute favorite moments are our family dinners.
