Since Aug. 15, students entering University Park Campus are regularly greeted by security ambassadors — commonly known as “Yellow Jackets” because of their bright-yellow-and-red uniform — as they tap their USCards before dashing off to class. The security ambassadors are also stationed at various intersections near campus at night, where they keep watch over students. However, some security ambassadors have gone beyond the call of duty.

A new policy instituted this year requires all USC clubs to be open to all interested students. To accommodate the new rules, many selective clubs, particularly clubs associated with the Marshall School of Business, have had to adjust their structures. Several clubs have created “general membership” programs as a kind of stepping stone by teaching students the skills and knowledge required for the clubs’ selective programs.

Charlotte Song was in bed when the fire alarm in her off-campus apartment building, Hub Los Angeles Figueroa, went off around 3 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 19. It wasn’t the first time her building’s fire alarm had gone off at an odd time, as it had an ongoing problem. But as the minutes passed, Song began wondering whether it was real. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I think it actually might be a real fire,’” said Song, a sophomore majoring in computer science and business administration.

Armed with trifold boards and prototypes, teams of local middle and high school students — future scientists, engineers, programmers and more — took over a Southeast Portland event space last weekend with a shared goal to save the planet. The only catch? To do it, they had to best each other at a “Demo Day” sponsored by Oregon MESA, a nonprofit that works to bring equity in science, engineering, technology and math to underrepresented groups in those fields, according to its mission statement.
