Tigers roll to D-IV Central Section championship

The Tigers needed that spirit in the final against Coalinga. In the top of the first inning, Coalinga sophomore Chloe Sandoval opened the contest with a double to left field. Moments later, she scored on a groundout to give the Horned Toads the early lead and momentum. But senior pitcher Audrina Rodriguez and the Woodlake defense held it down the rest of the night as the Horned Toads could not muster up another run.

CLOVIS – This past Saturday, May 24, high school track and field programs from across the Central Valley gathered at Buchanan High School to compete in the CIF Central Section Masters Championships. Against the best of the best in the Valley, several local athletes performed well to make their schools proud. For Immanuel High School, Alexandra Schartmann took second in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 55.61 seconds. She also finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.64 seconds.

KINGSBURG – Over the past three seasons, Kingsburg baseball has emerged as one of the powerhouse baseball programs in the Central Valley. In 2023 and 2024, the Vikings reached the mountaintop with two straight Division III Central Section Championships. The Vikings lost many impactful seniors from those teams, but have continued to sail high this spring as they have gone on a run to the Division II Central Section Semifinal.

The Spartans end their season with an overall record of 17-9. After finishing second in the East Sequoia-Sequoia League in the regular season, the Spartans started strong in the playoffs with a 19-0 win over No. 14 seed Alpaugh and a 5-2 victory over No. 6 seed Corcoran. But when they faced the Rough Riders, the Spartans made too many mistakes. In the top of the first inning, a Strathmore error allowed Roosevelt senior Lenna Garcia to score to give the Rough Riders the early lead.

FOWLER – So far through the Division III Central Section playoffs, Fowler baseball has shown why they are the No. 1 seed in their bracket. The Redcats started the postseason strong with a 6-2 win over No. 16 seed El Diamante in the first round. And in their quarterfinal game this past Wednesday, May 21, the Redcats continued to roll when they hosted the No. 9 seed Monache Marauders. After falling behind 1-0 early in the contest, the Redcats found their stride to score four straight runs.

Along with Smith pitching a complete game for the Redcats, they got contributions from throughout their offensive lineup. Junior Matthew Luna made his presence felt at the plate where he recorded two hits and two RBIs for the Redcats. But it was the Marauders who struck first in the top of the second inning, where junior Benicio Mendoza singled to right field to give the Marauders the lead. However, the Redcats would not be caged for much longer.

PORTERVILLE – After opening the Division II Central Section playoffs with a bye, Monache softball finally saw some playoff action this past Tuesday, May 20. As they faced the No. 6 seed Kingsburg Vikings in the quarterfinals, the No. 3 seed Monache Marauders found themselves in a battle. The Marauders used their home field and a strong performance from starting junior pitcher Sophia Martinez to take a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.

The Marauders’ playoff win over Kingsburg comes a full week after beating Porterville to end the regular season. While other teams might let a full week off slow them down, Bamber and the Marauders were hard at work to prepare themselves for the quarterfinals. “We had a little bit of an inner squad (game) at the end of the week so we didn’t take last week off at all,” Bamber said. “We were working so I don’t think it impacted us at all.

And the Marauders needed that energy as they struggled to get the bats going early on. They opened the top of the second inning with a couple singles, but they left both runners stranded. While the game was not going their way, Williams made sure to keep his team focused. “The message was to stick to what we do. Don’t worry about the umpires, don’t worry about this, don’t worry about that, don’t give in and play our game,” Williams said.
