    During a family gathering a few years ago, my son-in-law’s eyes spotted an old Christmas card attached to the side of my cluttered refrigerator. How he spotted it was amazing since the outside of my fridge is usually something of a fire hazard. Everything from my grandchildren’s artwork to wedding invitations, old pictures, magnets, pizza restaurant menus, local theater events and handwritten notes from friends can be found — with a bit of intense searching.

    As we walked through the patchy snow to Uncle Lawrence’s sugar shack in the woods behind his house, the pungent smell of smoke greeted us as we drew near the little old shed. This memory, at least 60 years old, came back full force when my cousin Janet and I shared Easter and maple syrup season recollections during a recent phone conversation.

    There I was, standing in my daughter’s living room holding on to the top of her live Christmas tree praying that it would stand up straight once she gave the signal to let go. “OK, Mom, I got the bolts tightened up on the stand — let go of the tree and see if it’s standing straight,” Suzi commanded from her squatting position under the tree. With a fair amount of skepticism, I let go of the tree.

    During their years of marriage, Betty Bean assured her Vietnam veteran husband, Thomas, that she would do whatever she could to honor veterans. After her husband died in 2019, Bean carried on her husband’s request by creating and handing out cards, with an American flag star from one that was to be burned, and inscribed with the words, “I support those who protect and defend our freedom.”She has handed out close to 1,500 cards in the past year, with 350 remaining.
