Standing on the edge of her 50th birthday, avid fly-fisher Clairey Grubbs remembers what it felt like years ago to walk into fly shops in Montana, realize she was the only woman in the store and field the same questions from sales people: “Are you waiting for your husband? Are you shopping for your boyfriend?”Grubbs, 49, simply turned around and walked out of those shops forever. Now she’s working to get more women on the water as a board member for Stripping for a Cure.

Bird lovers from across the nation are expected to flock to the first-ever Jackson Hole Birding Festival from May 22 to May 25. The three-day event will offer some 400 birders a chance to observe western tanagers, raptors, owls and magpies while possibly also spotting a moose or a bear. Organizers are dubbing it “wilderness birding.”The event organizer is David Rohm of Pittsburgh, a filmmaker whose documentary, “Golden Eagles: Witnesses to a Changing West,” has appeared on PBS.

Clairey Grubbs, 49, is a recovering addict who struggles with the side effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Sick of toiling with a spin rod as her now-husband out-fished her, Grubbs said she turned to fly fishing several decades ago and found it “miraculously healing” for her heart and overactive brain. As a board member for Stripping for a Cure, Grubbs helps to connect cancer patients and their caregivers to that same sense of healing by getting them on the water.

Most people don’t want to think about what Krista Nethercott does for a living. Nethercott, 47, a licensed mortician and co-owner of Grand Teton Funeral Home, deals with death every day, helping to transport dead bodies and arrange funeral services for grieving families. She and co-owner Tyson Clemons bought the Valley Mortuary business from its former owner in late 2021, in an effort to keep Jackson’s only funeral home family owned. She worked at Valley Mortuary for 20 years.
