I had mixed feelings when I was summoned to jury duty late last month. It put me in mind of the 1957 film “12 Angry Men.”True to its name, the New York City-based movie was a series of angry confrontations, bitter arguments and ugly menacing during jury deliberations — in other words, not much different from what civic discourse has become. Outside of work, I look for less drama, like rowing my boat on a lake. The jurors — all white men — didn’t start out angry.

Add in the four initiatives that seek to overturn or modify laws passed by the Legislature.

When my toddler son was diagnosed with developmental delays, I was wracked with worry about what his life would be like. Boo Radley came to mind. The gentle, misunderstood character in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” who seemed to have intellectual disabilities. He was isolated and thought of by community members as a threat. I’m embarrassed that was what I first thought when I imagined my baby’s future.
