Before we made the final decision to put Tigers ace Tarik Skubal on our cover, I did some digging in the Hour Detroit archives (after all, baseball is a game of stats). First, I wanted to see how many times a Tiger had graced our cover. The answer? Five.

Bridal fashion has been a Detroit staple at Hour Detroit since 1998 (the first year we published 12 issues). Normally, an annual feature like this can cause me some stress — “What are we going to do this year?” — but I don’t have much to worry about with this one. It’s in the hands of our very talented and capable designers, Creative Director Lindsay Richards and Associate Art Director Steven Prokuda.

His version, crafted from creased leather reinforced with hidden layers of aluminum and paired with matching cuffs that emerged from the sleeves, had a starched look.

Last summer, Jeanne Friot was one of a handful of young French designers showcased during the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympic Games. Her look, inspired by Joan of Arc, was the starting point for her battle-ready genderless fall collection. “I wanted to develop the story,” said the designer, who shares the French first name of the historic heroine, backstage before her show. “There was a lot we could dig into.

Emeric Tchatchoua wants to encourage us to slow down. “I was home watching a movie, and my phone kept on ringing. It made me think about when I was a kid, when everyone always watched all the way through,” said last year’s ANDAM Special Prize winner backstage ahead of his show.

While January is a time for many to establish new habits, Hour Detroit favors a predictable routine. Every year, we kick things off with our Detroiters feature, which highlights the individuals who are making a difference in metro Detroit and beyond. We’ve honored as few as one person and as many as 24 people in an issue. This year, while we have only five articles in the feature, we are honoring more than 30 people:four individuals and one team.
