Two local students competed in the first three rounds of the 100th Annual Scripps Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, that began at the end of May. The competition days were May 27-29 this year. Chesapeake Middle School student Joseph Keffer, an incoming sixth grader, made it to the national spelling bee for the first time this year after placing fifth at the Chesapeake Spelling Bee last year.

IRONTON — Two sites in Lawrence County, Ohio, were recognized Wednesday as having been officially listed on the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. According to the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tourism Initiative, there have been eight verified sites added to the network in the Tri-State area. When completed, the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour will include 27 verified Network to Freedom sites.

A federally funded program that provides vouchers for low-income seniors to access locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from farmers markets and roadside stands has been made available again this year. Through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, each eligible senior may receive a booklet of three $10 vouchers, totaling $30, to be redeemed at participating farmers markets across the state listed on the West Virginia Department of Agriculture website.

HUNTINGTON - Cabell County Schools will continue to provide meals through its federally funded Summer Food Service Program this year for people ages 18 and under. The program begins June 16 and ends Aug. 1. Through Cabell County Schools, students may access meals throughout the summer months at various community sites or pick up weekly meal boxes in rural parts of the district, as determined by the USDA, according to a news release.

HUNTINGTON — Cabell County educators, residents and parents showed up to a meeting hosted by Board of Education member Linda Childers on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the possibility of shifting school start times for middle and high school students. Childers has brought up the idea to move start times to later for these students at several meetings, arguing students may be more alert and perform better if they get more sleep.

Five local students were announced as winners of National Merit Scholarships financed through the U.S. college or university of their choice. Colleges and universities chose each of the students from the list of finalists of the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program who indicated they plan to attend that institution, according to a news release.

HUNTINGTON — Workers began minor demolition on the site of Holderby Hall on Monday morning. Originally named South Hall, the nine-story building included co-ed student housing with a cafeteria on 5th Avenue, according to the Marshall Digital Scholar archives. It was built in 1963, renovated for additional space in 1968, and was renamed in 1980 after James Holderby, who sold his farm to establish Marshall Academy in 1837, according to the archives.
