Two local students competed in the first three rounds of the 100th Annual Scripps Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, that began at the end of May. The competition days were May 27-29 this year. Chesapeake Middle School student Joseph Keffer, an incoming sixth grader, made it to the national spelling bee for the first time this year after placing fifth at the Chesapeake Spelling Bee last year.

IRONTON — Two sites in Lawrence County, Ohio, were recognized Wednesday as having been officially listed on the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. According to the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tourism Initiative, there have been eight verified sites added to the network in the Tri-State area. When completed, the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour will include 27 verified Network to Freedom sites.
